Job Opportunities
Scale Up. Join WAP!
In WAP, we take pride in making the complex simple. The software components that we create are fundamental building blocks, used by other teams at Amazon to build their retail websites. We're responsible for ensuring that these websites stay up and running, 24x7 - no excuses. And everything needs to respond gracefully to very drastic changes in usage patterns - from a few hundred new users up to a few million, in a very short timeframe.
We're looking for people who want to get behind the scenes - people who'd jump at the chance to have their code used by people all over the world. For the customers, it's magic. For you, it's an opportunity to work hard, have fun, and make history.
Below is a list of development teams within WAP. If you can see yourself working on any of these teams, then we should talk!

Simple Email Service
The Simple Email Service team owns and operates Amazon's Simple Email Service (SES), an Amazon Web Services (AWS) solution for email delivery. Amazon SES is a highly scalable and cost-effective email-sending service for developers that eliminates the complexity and expense of building an in-house email solution or licensing, installing, and operating a third-party email service. We are growing fast and changing the way businesses send email. We own SES end-to-end, including customer relationship management, product requirements and design, business planning, technology and innovation, along with other areas unique to email and cloud computing. If you are excited about being an owner in a startup-like environment working on an explosive growth cloud-based business then contact us today.
Content Management
The Content Management team provides an end-to-end framework for creating, managing, and optimizing what the users see on all Amazon sites. Our customers are website designers, development teams, and site merchandisers: They use our team's software to create and customize text, pictures, rich media, and all manner of dynamic content widgets. Once this is done, the Content Management team's scheduling and content-delivery systems go to work, ensuring that the right pieces of content appear on the right web pages, in the right places at the right times. And our customers always have access to content performance data, so that they can respond to rapidly changing business needs. Our team's products are engineered with reuse and extensibility in mind, and many other teams have incorporated our APIs into their own products. The work that we do directly affects Amazon's bottom line, by driving millions in revenue annually.
Configuration Technologies
The Configuration Technologies team provides authoritative, self-service configuration solutions for Amazon's service architecture. We are working toward the day when every service's behavior can be altered dynamically, at runtime - without ever having to restart it. For example, business owners should be able to change the appearance and layouts of their web pages, as well as their content, at any time. We eschew hardcoded settings, in favor of flexible, ultra-scalable configuration services and management tools. These services and tools are used by thousands of marketplaces and websites hosted by Amazon today, and will play an ever-increasing role in the management of Amazon's platform tomorrow. We're just getting started!
Weblab
The WebLab team provides customized software to measure and optimize our websites, based on customer behavior during live and statistically rigorous experimentation. Using WebLab software, business owners can easily activate new website features, for a statistical sample of users. Business owners can then use WebLab analysis tools to make well-informed go/no-go decisions, launching critical new features that can potentially generate millions of dollars. Our team also processes and analyzes customer behavior data, generating the metrics that business owners rely upon to drive changes to Amazon's websites.
Email Platform
The Email Platform team manages all systems related to generating, prioritizing, and delivering email to Amazon's customers. Our systems send billions of email messages annually to our customers all over the world, such as order confirmation and shipment notifications, promotional mass-mail offers, and personalized recommendations. Our team owns Amazon's core automated email system, which schedules and sends thousands of email campaigns per day. We also run Amazon's email marketing and customer segmentation tools, used by hundreds of business and technical users across the company. Finally, we manage and maintain Amazon's outbound email infrastructure. All of this keeps us very busy; on the Email Platform team, we attack hard problems head-on, and deliver timely solutions for all of Amazon.
Automated and Targeted Merchandising
The Automated and Targeted Merchandising team delivers relevant merchandising content to users who are most likely to respond favorably to that content. Our team manages a wide range of automated, highly scalable systems for delivering targeted email and website content to receptive customers. We also own a number of systems that assist marketing and merchandising professionals to find, schedule, and apply relevant targeting for any subset of users. Automated and Targeted Merchandising systems rely heavily on computational advertising, data mining and machine learning techniques. These techniques, combined with aggregated customer behavior data, allow us to provide a high degree of accuracy in targeting the right demographics - and driving higher sales as a result.
Clickstream
The Clickstream team collects and processes data about how our websites are used. How much data? Consider the number of mouse clicks a user makes during a single session, multiplied by millions of the number of user sessions per day, across all of Amazon's e-commerce websites...the amount of raw data is truly staggering. We crunch all of this data, and provide aggregated data feeds and metrics to website owners all over Amazon; these owners rely on this data, plus the Clickstream team's analysis tools, to make business-critical decisions with confidence - every single day.
Personalization
The Personalization team owns the product recommendation systems, for all Amazon-owned website properties. We analyze customer behavior in real time, combine it with each customer's unique interests, and recommend relevant products. The team also supplies customer behavior data to other systems that drive behaviorally-targeted advertisements on all Amazon sites. Spanning academia, research, and real-world systems running at a massive scale, the Personalization team surprises and delights millions of customers each day.
Community Platform
The Community Platform team builds technology that lets customers learn from one another. We own the systems that power Amazon customer reviews - the Web's go-to place for anyone making a purchase decision. And that's just the beginning: Our software also forms the basis for product discussions, blogs, shopping guides - all the cool features that allow customers to share information and advice, and improve the shopping experience for all. Oh, and did we mention scalability? Huge quantities of data? Always-on availability? Community Platform team members live and breathe this stuff, every day - with millions of satisfied customers, we can't afford not to.
Media Services and Applications
The Media Services and Applications team (MSA) builds and manages Internet-scale image and media management solutions, for Amazon-owned websites, customers, and partner websites. MSA supplies the end-to-end services and frameworks that allow Amazon and its customers to store and manage vast amounts of images and rich media content. Once uploaded, MSA's highly distributed and scalable systems deliver this media, to Amazon-owned and partner websites. The complexity of these systems is balanced by the simplicity of the management tools that we provide, making it easy for other teams to upload and manage their own images and rich media. The result: Timely, engaging website content, on demand, for millions of customers worldwide.
Localization Services
Amazon-owned websites speak your language, and the Localization Services team makes it happen. We manage all of the services and workflows for translating website content - in any locale, and in any language. You can see our work first-hand by visiting sites such as amazon.fr, amazon.de and amazon.co.jp: The customer sees a localized website, but there are several large, globally-distributed systems beneath the surface, delivering localized content to the right place at the right time. Localization Services runs all of this technology, and gives website owners easy-to-use tools for creating websites that are customized for any language.
Website Request Handling
The Website Request Handling team owns the software and systems for request management and URL management, across all of Amazon's websites worldwide. Every website request travels through our software. For each request, we apply rewrite/redirect rules, and route the request to its destination as efficiently as possible. Our customized traffic-management service allows business owners to be selective in real-time about traffic they receive right down to the page-level. Our URL management service helps business owners and developers configure and propagate their own URLs, including short URLs. Serving billions of requests for millions of pages across hundreds of websites all over the world, our systems impose negligible impact on performance and are always available.
Website Rendering
The Website Rendering team builds the front-end software that powers Amazon and subsidiary websites, Amazon WebStore, and a growing number of third-party websites. The simple act of requesting a web page triggers a flurry of activity against hundreds of back-end services and data sources: Our team's software retrieves all of the requested pieces of data, formats them, and then assembles the completed web page - on-the-fly and on-demand. Website Rendering's efforts are directed at 100% of customer requests served, with a 0% error rate. We help our customers' websites scale from one visit a month, all the way up to hundreds of millions of requests per day - all with the highest efficiency and the lowest latency possible.
Armor
Hardware and software faults can and do occur - but there's no reason for them to bring our website operations to a screeching halt. The Armor team provides tools to detect failures and anomalies, and then recover gracefully from them, without any manual intervention. On the Armor team, we create web services which proactively monitor all other website services. When a failure occurs, our software predictively determines the fingerprint of the failure, and takes corrective action - before it can pose a threat to production operations. We do this by correlating massive amounts of seemingly unrelated data, across thousands of services, server fleets, and runtime metrics - all in real-time. Our tools reduce operational pain, and as a result, significantly lower the cost of running Amazon's websites.
Website Hosting
The Website Hosting team owns and operates websites, on behalf of multiple tenants - including Amazon's own retail operations, worldwide. Working closely with our customers, we provide hardware, data center resources, and management tools. Our customers can then deploy their website software to those resources. From there, Website Hosting does whatever it takes to keep those websites running. We take pride in engineering highly available, scalable, fast, efficient websites. We also take pride in driving operational costs to the floor, by optimizing our server fleets, analyzing and tuning hardware/software configurations, automating existing manual processes, and continuously improving our software.
Caching
The Caching team is all about lightning-fast data access. Our team's products store and manage copies of source data, reducing the load on databases and other back-end systems. Our customers are development teams all over Amazon, and their systems cannot tolerate resource contention. Our team engineers bulletproof caching solutions, leveraging storage, communication, and consistency-management components. These caching solutions are fully integrated with Amazon application frameworks, so it's very easy for customers to leverage caching technology in their systems. The result? Our customers can promise the highest levels of availability and performance for their systems, with minimal latency, and at the lowest cost. And using the Caching team's products, our customers can scale like crazy.
Real-Time Log Analysis (RTLA)
The Real Time Log Analysis team (RTLA) manages the run-time metrics for over 40 of Amazon's largest websites. Every website request generates a little bit of logging data, and if you multiply one request by the number of requests per second, over a period of months, and across multiple websites...well, let's just say that you'll end up with a gargantuan amount of data. RTLA provides the tools to sift through all of that data and make sense out of it. We provide search tools and reports, so development teams can drill down and investigate the root causes of website errors. We feed log data to notification and performance systems, so that support staff can be notified as soon as an error occurs. And we enable our customers to analyze actual system performance, in real time, so that they can continuously improve their websites.
Open Source Architecture
The Open Source Architecture team handles Open Source issues across Amazon and its affiliates. We get involved with business initiatives across the company and the globe - from the retail websites, to Amazon Web Services (AWS) and on to the Kindle - offering advice and performing due diligence on package usage, assisting Legal with license and pre-acquisition code reviews and guiding community managers. We create solutions to assist with the above, automating package investigation and defining/implementing patch management processes. We also dive into the creation of projects like the Amazon osCommerce plugin, the AWS Eclipse plugin and patches to Open Source projects such as Hadoop and Tomcat. If it's related to Open Source then we'll be involved.
Client Side Metrics
The Client Side Metrics team answers the question, "What did the customer actually see and how quickly did they see it?", by collecting data from the browser. We use special browser features to capture data about how quickly page features are loaded, what device, browser, and version is being used, and other information that can only be captured from within the browser. The data is used by website owners all over Amazon to set performance goals and which browsers/platforms to target for new features.
Caprese
Few websites are as large-scale as Amazon. Caprese (the Capacity Prediction Service) provides Amazon services with a simple automatic scaling solution based on analysis of past trends. We monitor metrics such as website traffic and orders, predict future customer behavior using statistical models, then automatically scale server fleets to accommodate our expected needs. This ensures that Amazon's websites and services can provide an excellent customer experience without the expense of unnecessary hardware.
